When Primary Bites Back - Another Funny Conversation with Coleman

Because Cole is a boy he has an obsession with guns.  We were eating breakfast this morning when he began discussing that if someone was shot with a gun it would hurt.  I, of course, tried to promote gun safety.  This is a summary of the conversation that followed.

Me: We don't ever shoot people with guns or even point guns at people.
Cole: But we can talk about it.
Me: No, we shouldn't talk about it because guns can hurt people really badly, so badly they can die.
Cole: . . . and then they'll be resurrected.

Oh boy.  I guess we need to find a different way to promote gun safety than the finality of death.

3 year old perception of what Mom does.

I wanted to relate  a conversation we had in the car with Brooklyn last night.

Brooklyn: When I grow up I want to be a Mommy and my name will be Michelle.
Michelle: Oh really.  What do Mommies do?
Brooklyn:  They clean up.
Michelle: Do Mommies like to clean up?
Brooklyn: Yes.  They do like cleaning up.

At least we now know what a Mommy does.

It's a Boy!

We had our second ultrasound.  It was interesting to watch.  They didn't give us any cool heart or brain pictures.  I'll share what we have below - only a couple of profile shots and a gender shot (Marked, just in case we couldn't see it.).

Camping @ Joshua Tree

This is a movie from camping a Joshua Tree shortly before we left California and moved to Oregon.  I was studying for COMLEX Level 1 at the time. I've been enjoying old movies of the kids, and now I'm sharing another one.  We'd been spending a lot of time at Bass Pro Shop looking at the fish so as soon as Cole saw the video camera he wanted to watch the videos of him at Bass Pro Shop.

Here's a link to the blog post Michelle made right after the camping trip.

Brooklyn's Bike

I've finally found a good way of converting the videos taken by our video camera to a more universal format.  I found this one and thought it was cute so I thought I'd share.  Brooklyn got a bike for Christmas and love to ride it.  This video of her riding the bike was taken the day after Christmas on the way to get the mail.

She really likes to ride her bike and she's cute.

P.S. It looks like there was a lot of quality loss in the upload.  Sorry!

Hooray!

I just have to brag for a minute. My amazing husband is graduating from medical school! We're so proud of him! He'll be doing a 1 year traditional internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, OR, then we're headed to Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta, Georgia for a 3 year anesthesia residency! It's going to be an adventure!

We're so proud of him for his excellence in academics, the calmness and level head with which he navigates tricky situations, his kindness and patience in his interactions with people, and especially for his integrity and commitment to our family and other important life priorities.

We love you so much, Tyler, and are so impressed with the amazing man that you are! Life's a balancing act and you are a truly talented acrobat! All our love, Cole, Brookie and Michelle xo

P.S. He's also an accomplished maker of particle board furniture. He can pull off being an OB by day and a mechanic by night. He's made his own soap and washed clothes in our bathtub.  He's studied countless hours with babies on his lap and slept with them in his arms. Cole and Brookie know they’re the most important thing in his life. He's been the king of dishes and floors. He builds computers.  He's the neighborhood bike guy. He can sew skin AND fabric. (He’s helped sew Christmas presents for the kiddos.) He's the smartest guy we know - according to us and the doctors he's worked with this year. We're definitely impressed with his many talents! :)

Raspberry Pi - Computer

Computers keep getting more powerful, smaller, and now much cheaper.  Enter the Raspberry Pi computer.  The picture above is about the size on an iPhone and all for $35.  It's being billed as a way for people to begin developing and programming. (Something I wish I was doing more of myself.)  Michelle, was thinking that this could make the idea of every child in a classroom having a computer a reality.

The model B, which was released first, sold out within minutes of release.
Specs for the model B include

  • Broadcom BCM2835 700MHz ARM1176JZFS processor with FPU and Videocore 4 GPU
  • GPU provides Open GL ES 2.0, hardware-accelerated OpenVG, and 1080p3D
  • H.264 high-profile decode GPU is capable of 1Gpixel/s, 1.5Gtexel/s or 24GFLOPs with texture filtering and DMA infrastructure
  • 256MB RAM
  • Boots from SD card, running Raspberry Pi Fedora Linux Remix
  • 10/100-BaseT Ethernet port
  • HDMI port
  • USB 2.0 port
  • RCA video port
  • SD card slot
  • Powered from microUSB port
  • 3.5mm audio out jack
  • Header footprint for camera connection
  • Size: 85.6 x 53.98 x 17mm

There is a group developing it for use as a media center, which I think is an awesome use for a $35 computer.

You should buy one too.  Of course, first they have to become available.
